Notes: Fr. Carl M. Sutphin is reportedly one of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ most prolific abusers. At least 18 survivors have come forward alleging child sexual abuse by Fr. Sutphin between approximately 1958 and 1978. Cardinal Mahony received reports of child sexual abuse by Fr. Sutphin in 1991 and 1994. Fr. Sutphin was sent to St. Luke Institute, an institution known for treating priests accused of child sexual abuse. In 2002, the Archdiocese forced Fr. Sutphin to retire early and permanently removed him from ministry. He was arrested in 2003 on charges of child sexual abuse. The charges were later dropped. Fr. Sutphin was laicized in 2005. He has been named in several civil lawsuits. Fr. Sutphin was included in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ list of priests accused of sexual misconduct involving minors. As of 2013, it is believed Fr. Sutphin was living in Camarillo, CA. Fr. Sutphin’s current whereabouts and whether he has access to children are unknown.
